Every 30 years Ohio changes its statuary representations in the nation’s Capitol Building Statuary Hall. Ohio’s current statues are of William Allen 1886 (former Governor of Ohio) and President James A. Garfield. A new Ohio representative will be chosen from a list of historically important Ohioans: James Ashley, Thomas Edison, Ulysses S. Grant, William McCulloch, Jesse Owens, Judith Resnik, Albert Sabin, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Harriet Taylor Upton, Orville and Wilbur Wright.
MARCC is supporting Harriet Beecher Stowe as the State of Ohio Statuary representative. Stowe lived in Ohio for 20 years 1832-1852 at 2950 Gilbert Avenue in Walnut Hills.
Shortly after leaving Cincinnati and basing her writing on her experiences in Cincinnati, in 1851-1852, Harriet Beecher Stowe authored the best-selling book of its time, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, a fictionalized popular account of the pain slavery imposed on its victims and of the difficult struggles of slaves to escape and travel, on the Underground Railroad, to freedom in the northern states or Canada. Her novel convinced millions of Americans (and others) that slavery must end.
Ballot and voting information is available online at www.LegacyforOhio.org. Individuals can vote for any one of the ten finalists listed on the ballot and mail it in by June 12, 2010.
Please support Harriet Beecher Stowe. If selected, she would be the first female statue representing Ohio in the Statuary.
